Celebrating its 25th anniversary, LIFF presents a special 4K screening of the Oscar nominated Lagaan. Set in 1890’s India in a small village, the tyrannical Captain Russell has imposed an unprecedented land tax on its citizens. Bhuvan (Aamir Khan), a rebellious farmer rallies the other villagers to publicly oppose the tax. Russell offers a novel way to settle the dispute: he challenges Bhuvan and his men to a game of cricket, a sport completely foreign to India.

Known for his sweeping narratives, Ashutosh Gowariker directed Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan in the Oscar®- nominated Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001) and won the Audience Award at Locarno International Film Festival that year. Under his direction, star Shah Rukh Khan delivered one of the finest performances of his career in Gowariker’s Swades (2004), as did Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan in the Mughal-inspired epic Jodhaa Akbar (2008).
